Synthesis and characterization of novel π-extended antiaromatics
A large part of our research efforts is directed toward synthesizing and characterizing unusual π-systems that contain antiaromatic subunits. Besides the fundamental interest in understanding the structure, bonding, and reactivity of such polycyclic conjugated, π-extended antiaromatics could be a useful compound class in molecular electronics applications.
Molecular switches
Molecular switches are used as control elements in fields as diverse as catalysis, pharmacology, and molecular electronics. Our aim is to develop novel switchable molecules and materials that can be used to achieve high-level control in such applications.

Polydopamine-based surface chemistry
Polydopamine is a synthetic polymer inspired by mussel-adhesives that can be simply produced by the oxidative polymerization of dopamine. It is a general adherent, able to stick to essentially any surface. Furthermore, owing to the catechol moieties present in its structure, the polymer in applications ranges from heterogeneous catalysis to photoswitchable interfaces.
